Protect what Matters Most —
Protect your family and home!
This month is Fire Prevention Month and we want to take a moment and ask that you protect what matters most, your family and your home. In 2015 there were 501,500 structure fires in America. A majority, 77.4%, of these fires occurred in residential settings that include homes, and multifamily dwellings, hotels and dormitories. Further examination shows that 53.9% (270,500) fires were in one and two family dwellings.
Fires caused 3,280 civilian fire deaths in 2015. One and two family homes were the site of 2,155 deaths, 60% of the total death toll. 13,000 people were injured in structure fires and 8,050 of these injuries occurred in one and two family homes.
You can make your family safer in your home
by doing a few simple tasks.
Don’t Wait – Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years
- Smoke alarms are less reliable as they get older. Replacing smoke alarms over 10 years old will provide the best protection.
- Make sure all smoke alarms are functioning properly and replace batteries.
- Do you have enough smoke alarms? Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home inside every sleeping room and outside each sleeping area.
- Install and maintain carbon monoxide detection equipment.
- Have an emergency plan and a meeting place to account for your family in an emergency.
- Practice your plan and have two ways out.
